THE INAUGURAL THANKS GIVING HOLY MASS AND THE ASSEMBLY
St. Peter's College, Colombo 04, dedicated the academic year 2018 to God our Loving Father at a Thanks Giving Holy Mass celebrated on the 12th of January, 2018.
The Chief Celebrant of the Thanks Giving Holy Mass was Rev Fr. Trevor Martin, the Rector of St. Peter's College, Colombo 04 and he was joined by the Priest Community of the College. The Homily was delivered by Rev. Fr. Thilina Pathum the Sports Coordinator and the Priest in Charge of Grade 10. The entire College participated devoutly in thanking and praising God for all what He has been to College during 2017 and special prayers were offered invoking God our loving Father's blessings and protection during the academic year 2018.
A Special Assembly followed the Thanks Giving Holy Mass. The Assembly commenced with the observation of two minutes of silence as a mark of respect for Mr. M. Rufus A. C. Perera who was a member of the Tutorial Staff and Mrs. Rani Fernando who was a past member of the Tutorial Staff of St. Peter' s College, Colombo 04 who had passed away in the month of November and December respectively in 2017.
The Rector of St. Peter's College welcomed the students for the new academic year and especially extended a very warm welcome to the new Grade 6 students who had graduated from the Primary.
He also mentioned the names of the 13 students who had obtained 3 A's at the G. C. E. Advanced Level Examination for the year 2017. While congratulating them on this excellent achievement, the names of the students who had obtained 2 A's & 1B were also mentioned and appreciated. Rev. Fr. Rector also thanked the Tutorial Staff for contributing immensely for the success of these students.
Rev. Fr. Rector in his address drew the attention of the students specially to the new project that is launched in the College which is the Smart Classroom Concept. He said that the project was already in progress and a special group of teachers are being trained on how to use the Smart Classroom. As the College presently had only one Smart Classroom soon he said there will be a projector and a screen installed in every Grade so that more could be able to use this new approach in teaching and learning. Rev. Fr. Kamal Kumara will be Priest in Charge of the Smart Classroom.
He also went on to mention of the new projects that are launched by the College. The project of constructing a state of the art Science Laboratory will be concluded he said by mid February. He thanked the OBU Branch of UK for substantially helping College with the necessary funds to complete the Science Laboratory project. The Pavilion project is under way and he confirmed that very soon it will be over. He also assured that two more projects will be launched before the centenary celebrations of College i.e., the construction of a new Chapel and a new Auditorium.
Rev. Fr. Rector brought to the awareness of the students the important rules and regulations of the school and emphasized on the significance of observing them.
Rev. Fr. Rector made a special mention of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in College. He stated that every Friday there will be a special collection made and the money collected will go to the SVP which will utilize the donations to help the needy children in College. He urged students to donate generously to the SVP which is dedicated to help the poor and the needy children in College. Rev. Fr. Chrispin Leo, the Spiritual Director and Priest in Charge of London A/L, is in Charge of the SVP at College.
Rev. Fr. Rector while informing the students that the Sports Meet will be held on the 2nd of February, 2018, urged all the students to actively participate in the Sports Meet and make it a successful and a colourful event. The House Masters and their Deputies, the House Captains and their Deputies, and the House Athletic Captains and their Deputies were requested to organize the 79th Annual Inter House Athletic Championship for the year 2018 in a successful manner.
Rev. Fr. Rector pointed out that the First Term will be a busy term with a lot of activities such as the Sports Meet, Prize Giving, Big Match, the Limited Over and the Confirmation Ceremony, yet he said effort will be taken to give maximum attention to studies. Students will be involved in these activities, he said in such manner that their main focus on studies will not be disturbed.
Rev. Fr. Rector thanked the outgoing Grade Heads and their Deputies, House Masters and their Deputies for the invaluable service they have rendered to College. He welcomed the newly appointed Grade Heads and their Deputies and the House Master and their Deputies and wished them the very best.
The Assembly concluded with a prayer invoking the blessings of God our loving Father, the protection of Mary Our Blessed Mother and the guidance of St. Peter our Patron Saint on all at St. Peter's College, Colombo 04.
